Test Asylum Law6

Anishinabe Legal Services (ALS)

ALS provides legal services to low-income residents of the Leech Lake, White Earth, and Red Lake Reservations (Cass, Hubbard, Beltrami, Clearwater, Mahnomen, Becker, and Itasca counties). Cases focus primarily on issues involving the intersection of poverty law and federal Indian law. ALS needs volunteer attorneys to handle Indian law issues, educational and racial discrimination cases, domestic abuse, consumer, housing, juvenile law, especially the Indian Child Welfare Act, and other types of cases. Volunteers should have the ability to relate to low-income Native Americans and need to be licensed to practice law in Minnesota. Attorney support services include consultations with staff attorneys and use of the office library including Westlaw. Law students may do research and special projects.

We have a particular need for pro-bono attorneys to take cases involving domestic violence and family law matters or landlord/tenant law that are in district court.  The majority of our staff are licensed in tribal courts.  We have only a few that are licensed in Minnesota District Court.  Therefore, it is helpful to have volunteer attorneys experienced in district courts.  This includes people NOT familiar with Family Law.  If the attorney is comfortable in District court, we can provide back up in terms of the specific family law and domestic abuse issues.
